You could trust her with all your deepest secrets. And I did. The only one that she wouldn’t let me keep was when I was going to Montana to marry Dennie. She wouldn’t say, but she said I had to. That was one of the toughest things I ever told my father. I tried to break it to him easy by setting up scenarios where I would leave home, but he would always have an answer as to why it was a horrible idea that just wouldn’t work. College, no. Working for him in North Carolina, no. Getting my own place, no. So, I told him the day before I left, and mom said he cried for days after I did leave. He did come to the wedding and after meeting Dennie he understood. He loved him, too. But I don’t think he ever got over my leaving home.
