Each creature, mollusk, crab, clam or so on creates its own shell design. The shells provide protection against enemies, but even then, the circle of life wins out and the inhabitant is no more. But, this valuable real estate can be reused by another creature who is looking for a refuge from the dangers of sea life. Interesting when you consider that location, location, location is important in sea housing, too.
